About Glenn...

The following are emails I have received from people who know Glenn Boyer. The reason for my deciding to post these letters, is the rash of recent attacks levied against him.

The irony is, Glenn promised he would set the record about the Earps straight, and keep it straight. I have noticed that within the past year, people have stopped their personal attacks on the Earps, and are now attacking Glenn. I guess he has succeeded after all. - Drew Morgan

My Commentary:

I have read all of the books available on Wyatt Earp, including Glenn's. Before I personally knew Glenn, I knew through his writings, that he was the prominent, if not the most notable, Earp historian. I had no idea what he would be like in person, and so when the opportunity came to meet with him in October of last year, I was very interested to see what additional information, manuscripts, and personal effects might lie in store for us. What Glenn Boyer produced at this meeting, and what he did not, is now irrelevant to me.

I have a hard time understanding why so many people have recently decided to try and unveil secrets known only to Boyer, and of course, the Earps themselves. I have even a harder time understanding why they choose to dwell on this minute issue. Moreover, they could be using their valuable time, which they devote to this narrow subject, to contribute something of substance on the subject. In these articles, I gain no new insight, I learn nothing new about the Earps, I simply hear complaints about the work product of others. The pervasive attitude seems to be if you can't find anything new to reveal, simply criticize the work of others.

Glenn has recently deliberately revealed details about the source material for his books. He was immediately attacked. Boyer gets no credit for is his many contributions from these people. He and Ben Traywick are the only writers who have contributed substantial new information about the Earps since Lake's, Frontier Marshall. A recent person has gone so far as to call his work misleading and unethical. Those of you, who have read Boyer's work, know that it has been anything but misleading, unless of course you're a plagiarist. Glenn has unearthed a mountain of information on the subject of Wyatt Earp, controversial as it may be, and delivered it in an entertaining way.

Glenn Boyer is the last of the true storytellers. He has combined his years of Earp research along with first hand accounts from descendants to retell the Earp saga. Evidently, the divisive factions that existed then are alive and well today. Glenn is in his 70's and is being held accountable for everything he ever heard, from whom, and when; not to mention these very pundits want everything to have been notarized and authenticated in historical documents. I know I will disappoint these people when I say, guess what, it isn't going to happen. Do we only believe things that were written years ago? Does a newspaper article from the 1800's written by a political faction in Tombstone carry more weight than word-of-mouth stories handed down from generation to generation? If Glenn had written his books in the 1800's wouldn't these same people be relying on his information as first hand historically documented facts? The Parson journal is. We will never know exactly what happened in Tombstone and what the Earps motives were. Those secrets were taken to the grave long ago. What we can do is reconstruct, to the best of our ability, what could have happened, what may have happened, and in all probability what might have happened, but never what did happen. We can draw on historical documentation such as newspaper accounts, trial depositions, and city and town records and yes stories that were told to people who remember. We may come close to ascertaining what happened, but we will never know. Glenn Boyer has done just that.

At some point you must choose what to believe, and what not to. I have met Glenn Boyer, I believe him. He has shown me many articles from the collection of Wyatt, Josie, Mattie and more; and no, he did not have a notarized receipt.

We had a great time at our first Friends of Wyatt Earp meeting. I met high caliber people that were fun and interesting; that shared a common bond and fascination in the past. Many of these good people have spent years studying the Earps, Arizona, and the West. I consider many to be the best informed on the subject that I have met. This is why I have chosen to devote my time creating a memorial of our trip on this web page. The information Glenn imparted, the places he took us to, and his insightful interpretations, are memories that will live with me forever, and I will be forever indebted.

I am putting this controversy to rest in my mind. I understand that there will always be people that attack you when you are on top. It's the nature of little people.

I have been studying Wyatt Earp and his family for fifty-three years. I know Glenn Boyer to be the very best writer on the subject. His works are the ones that make sense, they add up when you put all the pieces together. He is an honest and very generous man, too generous for his own good I might add and this has lead to people taking advantage of him.

Through all my studies I have been able to discern a fake and a fraud when I read their material and usually I can spot them right away. These debunkers are just jealous wannabe's who had to steal information from him in the first place. The type of people who do this so called debunking think they can elevate themselves by walking on the backs of giants. Glenn is the 600 pound gorilla in all of Earpiana, my hat goes off to my old friend Glenn, He is a giant among a world of debunking midgets.

Dear Glenn,

I can never understand how you let the "little people" get you down. You are at the top of your field and the most admired Earp researcher/historian in the world! When you are the best there will always be others attempting to knock you down in hopes of lifting themselves up to your level. This can never happen as all of those who have read the Earp literature know that you (and Ben Traywick) are untouchable in this field. Every time you respond or react to the anti-Earp/Boyer crowd you are giving them exactly what they want. That is stooping down to their level. Why not just ignore them completely?! This will drive them crazy! To treat them as though they don't exist is the best punishment for them. To respond to their every criticism is to give them the publicity and credibility they so greatly desire. They have now become an "Earp Authority" just for attacking the real authority (you). Let us instead enjoy the friendship and commen interests of all those who have joined the FOWE book club. Although as a busy physician I have very little free time, I am greatly looking forward to meeting you and the other members of the club! I can't wait to go out on an outing with the group and see the areas where Wyatt Earp history was made. Granted I have visited many of these places on my own; to have you and the other FOWE along would be a dream come true. Why let a few JERKS spoil the potential years of friendship and exploration we could all enjoy together as we all have a common bond. I am asking you to please reconsider your position and to strongly go forward with your original plans for the FOWE book club. Leaving out and ignoring your critics is the worst punishment you can bestow upon them.

Look at all the criticism that was placed upon Wyatt through his 81 years, and to this day, by people who don't (and will never) look at how he lived his life objectively. Wyatt never backed down to the "little people". As the closest living contact we have on this planet to Wyatt I know you won't either!

Respectfully,

There have been a few individuals who have attacked Glenn Boyer claiming he has faked everything he ever wrote. Especially "I married Wyatt Earp". One writer in particular expected Glenn to have a piece of paper backing up anything Glenn ever wrote about Wyatt. He also expected Glenn (who is now 70+ years of age) to remember everything he ever wrote or did by the Month, day and year.

I have read most everything Glenn ever wrote and I have visited him at his home, and he has shown me some of the writings and photos he has. He has even shown me some of Wyatt's guns, his saddle, Jewelry Jose owned, Mattie's dress and trunk and the bed in which Wyatt died. How do I know that is all true. He does not have signed affidavits to prove any of it (at least he didn't tell me if he did) I believe it because Glenn said it was so. Why would he lie to me about such a thing? He was not trying to sell them to me.You know I never met a man called "Jesus" but I read about him in the "Bible" and none of the facts can be proven to me, yet I believe.

In one of the Glenn's books, he made up some things to sucker in some of the world's great historians. He did this because he was tired of other authors taking the credit for information Glenn discovered. In writing the "Illustrated Life of Doc Holiday" he provided these so called historians the opportunity of putting their foot in the mouth. These historians were quick to point out that one of the photos in "Illustrated Life of Doc Holiday" was so and so when all the time Glenn knew it was his aunt. He later released the fact that this book was a spoof. It was then time for those historians who knew it all to eat crow and they did.

Now if he was really trying to fake history would he later tell us that it was fiction? I think not. Glenn G. Boyer is by no means dumb. He is one of the best "read" men I ever met. Glenn also created the fictitious character Ted Eyck in "Wyatt Earp's Tombstone Vendetta". A lot has been made that Ted Eyck was not real. Again I remind the reader that if Glenn intended to perpetuate a fraud then he would have never revealed that Ted was not real. His explanation was that he wanted to make the book interesting to read (He certainly accomplished that fact) but he declared that all the facts in "Vendetta" came from the individuals listed in the back of the book and that none of the facts of the events were made up. Some writers would have us believe that since Ted was fictitious the whole book is fictitious. That is not logical thinking.

Now there are about a dozen or so people that have ganged up on Glenn and called him a history faker. What the public must remember is that there are 1000's of us that read Glenn's work with awe. Gosh! I say to myself (after reading all the little booklets of facts he just published) this man has more knowledge about Wyatt Earp and his friends than anyone alive.

This is a free country. You can choose to believe or not to believe. If you will pardon my modification of Mr... Lincoln's quote: You can please some of the people all of the time and you can please all of the people some of the time but you can't please all of the people all of the time.

I started reading about Wyatt Earp while in High School in the 50's and after reading all I can I have satisfied myself as to what really happened in Tombstone in the 1880's and it is all summarized by Glenn in "Wyatt Earp's Tombstone Vendetta" In my opinion this book on Wyatt Earp and friends is the most interesting and factual book ever written about Wyatt Earp. Everything else that I have read about Wyatt is nothing but a repetition of everyone else's writings.

So Mr... Glenn Boyer if you read this comment, all I can say is "Thanks for taking 50+ years of your life to tell me what Wyatt was really like." It is now time for you to sit back and enjoy the remainder of your life. You deserve it and remember that your enemies are few but you have many friends. May I always be considered one of them.
